Motorcycle leaned deep into a corner, suspension under full load

Suspension setup & overhaul

Setup tailored to rider, bike and circuit — the specialism of MCR Services.

Why suspension matters

Grip starts with the setup, not the tyre

A tyre can only give grip if it stays in contact with the asphalt. Whether it does is largely down to the suspension: the forks and shock that keep the bike stable under braking, through a corner and on the way out of it.

Standard factory setup is a compromise for an average rider under average conditions. Your weight, riding style and the circuit you ride are rarely average. That's why MCR Services sets up the suspension for the situation that actually matters: yours.

Setup and overhaul

Setup

Setting sag and tuning compression and rebound damping to your weight, riding style and circuit.

Overhaul

Fresh oil, new seals, and a check of the internals in the forks and shock.

Tailored

A daily road bike calls for a different setup than a race machine on the circuit.

What setup actually means

Suspension setup comes down to three variables: sag, compression damping and rebound damping. Sag is how much the suspension compresses under the weight of rider and bike — too little sag and the bike skips over bumps, too much and it sits too deep through the corner. Compression damping controls how fast the suspension compresses over a bump or on turn-in; rebound damping controls how fast it returns. Both need to be balanced with each other and with the sag, or one setting fights the other.

A good setup doesn't make the bike feel softer or harder — it makes it predictable: the same behaviour in every corner, clear feedback on how much grip is left, and a stable chassis under hard braking. That's exactly where the difference lies between a bike that "feels good" and a bike that is actually faster and safer to ride.

When an overhaul is needed

Suspension is a wear item. Oil loses its properties over time, seals start to leak and the internals get contaminated. Noticeable signs are suspension that "sticks" instead of moving smoothly, oil on the fork legs, or a bike that has gradually become less predictable — even without you changing the setup. During an overhaul, the internals are inspected, cleaned and replaced where needed, and fresh oil goes in.

Regular circuit use calls for more frequent overhauls than road use alone — the load on the suspension on a track day is considerably higher than on a commute.

Approach

How we work through the suspension

1

Intake

Rider weight, riding style, bike and use — road, track day or circuit.

2

Set sag

The basis of any setup, measured on the bike with rider on board.

3

Tune damping

Balancing compression and rebound with the sag and with each other.

4

Test & refine

We fine-tune further based on your feedback.
